A date printed on a packet can look remarkably authoritative. It sits there in tiny black numbers, quietly suggesting that your pasta may turn into a pumpkin at midnight.
Fortunately, food dates are more nuanced than that.
Understanding the difference between best-before and use-by dates can help you make safer decisions, save money and prevent perfectly suitable food from being discarded unnecessarily.
What does a best-before date mean?
A best-before date relates primarily to quality.
It indicates the period during which the manufacturer expects a properly stored product to retain its best flavour, aroma, texture or appearance. After that date, its quality may gradually change, but the date does not automatically mean the product has become unsafe.
Food Standards Australia New Zealand states that food bearing a best-before date may legally be sold after that date, provided it remains fit for human consumption.
Best-before dates commonly appear on shelf-stable products such as:
- Pasta and rice
- Cereal and snacks
- Canned and jarred products
- Sauces and condiments
- Coffee and tea
- Biscuits and confectionery
What does a use-by date mean?
A use-by date concerns safety.
Food carrying a use-by date should not be eaten or sold after that date because it may present a health or safety risk—even if it looks perfectly innocent while sitting in the fridge.
That is the crucial distinction:
- Best before: quality may change.
- Use by: safety may be affected.
Products past their use-by dates do not belong in the BB4D model.
Storage still matters
A date assumes the product has been stored according to the manufacturer’s directions. A sealed packet kept in a cool, dry pantry has had a rather different life from one left open beside the kettle during a humid summer.
Always check the packaging, storage instructions and product condition. Do not consume food with damaged seals, swelling, leaks, unusual odours, mould or other signs of spoilage.
Why BB4D focuses on best-before groceries
BB4D—Best Before, Better Deals—gives suitable groceries another opportunity to be purchased and enjoyed.
Our range may include products approaching or past their best-before dates, as well as surplus stock, discontinued lines and packaging-change products. Relevant product information should be displayed clearly, allowing you to understand what you are purchasing before adding it to your cart.
The result is a smarter way to shop: better prices for customers and less perfectly suitable food being overlooked.
Rescue. Save. Enjoy.
